Portrait in Acrylic, not Oils

This 12 x 12 canvas was painted directly from life, with acrylics, not oils. Though acrylics are wonderful in a lot of ways, it's next to impossible to paint wet in wet and to achieve soft edges, both good things for portraiture. I used a clunky brush to paint this portrait, and a bright saturated palette.

Today's daily oil painting is a big 24" by 37 acrylic on panel.This was painted directly from life, as our model looked out the window. This was an hour and a half pose, with breaks every half hour. I used big, 2" brushes and acrylics for speed. Available at Funk & Junk

Shell Painting, 1

9 x 12" oil on canvas, painted directly from life. I don't know the name of this pretty shell, I like the pink center, reminds me of the Caribbean.

North Wind, Mt. Baker

Cold & Clear, winter morning, looking over to Mt. Baker. Painted from life, 6 by 8" oil on panel. Way too cold to paint this little study outside, plein air. So, I just stayed by the stove and looked out the window.

Fishing Lures, Salmon Plugs

Today's daily painting is a small oil on panel, 5" x 7" of 2 salmon plugs, with the old school treble hook and glass eyes on the plugs.

Portrait of a Woman

Today's daily painting was painted from life, of our beautiful model Linda. 12" x 16" oil on canvas. Tried a couple of different compositions before developing this version. This was a long hour pose. Many light shifts as the sun was quite strong at first, and the light softened as the clouds moved in.

Today's daily painting is a 9 x 12" portrait, painted directly from the model, a one hour pose.I started this portrait with direct drawing with thin paint and a brush. Next, worked all over the canvas, background brushed in, features located, and then better observations of edges and shadow shapes. I had the mouth a little too low, so moved everything up 1/8 of an inch....so easy to move things around with oil paint!
