Absract Series, Season of Abstracts No. 1

This is the beginning of my current abstract series, started spring 2007 in New York at the Arts Student League. I worked back at my studio on San Juan Island thru the spring and summer into fall, and so I think of this as season of abstracts. In this series, I explored many compositions, colors, line quality, shape, speed, layers, and divisions. All of them came as an exploration into the square format and without any preconceived ideas. Mixed media, colored pencil, transparent and opaque acrylic, including Guerra paint, on heavy 300 lb w/c paper. I hope you enjoy, feel free to comment. I will be posting 100 pieces over the next 6 weeks, this, an on-line Art Opening!

Sitting Pretty, an elegant model, Claire

Today's painting starts with a photo portrait of Marty's beloved dog, Claire. Claire sat for her photo-op, and I will take it from there. Normally I paint directly from life, but with animals and children, I prefer photos, due to the wiggle factor. Stay tuned for the coming pet portrait.

Call for Artists

Starting in March, At the Westcott Bay Institute's Friday Harbor location, I will be curating a group show, the Figure at Work. This week, instead of daily oil paintings, I have been working on several pieces for the upcoming show. If you are a local artist that would like to participate in this show, please call me. Dates & info., we will be hanging March 20th and the show will be up for 2 months. Opening reception is March 21. Any medium fine, pieces need to be ready to hang. The theme can be interpreted however you wish, as long as it is figurative, and work can be anything within that theme.

Standing Pose, Nude with Kimono

Today's daily oil painting was done during a 2 hour pose. I had a huge canvas, 24" by 48" and I wish it was even bigger. I started with thin washes and built up thicker paint around the portrait. Though 2 hours is a long time, I could have used another 3 or 4 hours. I include a photo close up of the face. Full figure pose = combining figure painting with a portrait on top.

Today's daily oil painting was painted over 3 days, it's a big canvas, 24" x 24, for z little tiny dog. This is Tigger.
I had a lot of fun painting a pet portrait, Mr. Smith, in December.
Tigger is alive and well, and has quite the personality. If you would like a pet portrait with some pa-zazz, call me! Stay tuned for a coming pet portrait of Claire, the standard poodle, she sits like a sphinx, with a rhinestone collar.

Portrait of a Seasoned Sailor

Today's daily oil painting was painted from life. Our model Ramsey, entertained us with stories of survival at sea. This portrait is on a 14 by 18 canvas, done in oils from a 2 hour pose. He was a wonderful model. If you would like to model for our portrait group on Sunday mornings, call me!
